Brave men and women have proudly carried the Winnipeg Police Service badge while patrolling the streets of Winnipeg for nearly 150 years. As we research their stories we invite you to join us as we look into the often untold and forgotten stories of some of our members.
Remembering those who died, 1914-1918
In 1914, when World War I broke out, 152 Winnipeg Police members were granted leave to join the King’s Forces in the trenches of Europe. 29 of these members died in the line of duty and many more were injured. Just 72 of the 152 members left to serve returned to their duties within Winnipeg Police. While we do know exactly how many Winnipeg Police members left to join the efforts during World War II, we do know five members were killed in that campaign.
